Why Blue and White

Why Blue and White

According to Homes and Gardens, "Blue and white decor is timeless and one of the most classic interior design combinations, perfect for creating a serene yet fresh aesthetic." This colour palette inspires calmness, confidence, and connection.

As the saying goes, "there’s nothing new under the sun." This trend has deep roots, tracing back centuries and often associated with porcelain and ceramics in Chinese, Dutch, and British traditions.

The blue-and-white ceramics first appeared during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 906 AD). These ceramics featured cobalt blue pigment on a white base, usually applied with a brush under the glaze. Over time, the appeal of Chinese porcelain spread globally.

From intricate linear patterns to florals and animals, cobalt blue and white continued to gain popularity. By the 16th century, European markets were flooded with blue-and-white porcelain, first through Portuguese merchants and later via the Dutch East India Company. A notable product from this era is Kraak porcelain, which features central decorations and alternating borders.

In response to the Chinese porcelain craze, Delft pottery emerged in the mid-1600s. Delft potters began incorporating personal monograms and factory marks, creating tiles that became art pieces in their own right.

One can find Delft pottery and artefacts in South Africa.  the blue and white ceramics were first brought into the country by the early Dutch settlers who imported Chinese and European blue and white porcelain.

By the late 19th century, blue-and-white ceramics had become an essential part of elegant home decor, with specially designed sideboards and cabinets for showcasing these beautiful pieces.

The charm of blue and white endures, and in recent years, the trend has seen a resurgence due to its versatility and timeless appeal. International designers like Cara Fox and Helen Shaw highlight its ability to create serene, airy, and timeless environments, fitting for both traditional and modern homes.
